Subscribers of Uninor in Bengal and Calcutta will have to switch over to other service providers through mobile number portability as the telecom operator on Monday announced its decision to wind up operations in the two circles, citing unavailability of spectrum.
The company will issue a notice to customers in the two circles soon, requesting them to exhaust their balance before January 18 next year and utilise number portability.
The portability feature allows subscribers to retain their mobile number while changing operators. Following court guidelines, Uninor will have to stop operations in the two circles on January 19, 2013.
Uninor has a total customer base of 5.6 million in these circles, with 1.8 million in Calcutta alone.
