Spirit the winner at school fest

- Boy steps aside for junior; girl cherishes five-year bond

Mainak Nayak had impressed the judges with his belly dancing last year and bagged the winner’s crown. He remained a champion this year too, not for his nimble moves but his spirit — the Class XII student of Sunrise English Medium School did not compete to make way for a junior.

Mainak mirrored the essence of Dabur Red Paste presents The Great TTIS Challenge 2012 powered by Young Metro, where it is not only about winning.

“My school asked me not to participate because others should get a chance as well. Initially, I did feel a little let down since this is my last year in school, but there are other events I could be a part of,” Mainak said.

It is this spirit that keeps bringing back the likes of Mayuri Mukherjee to the fest. Now a student of Lady Brabourne College, Mayuri had been a part of the TTIS Challenge right from its first edition in 2005. “I was in Class VIII and, as a Tiger (TTIS reporter), I was a part of the planning committee,” recalled Mayuri, who passed out of school three years ago, but not TTIS Challenge.

“My schedule does not allow me to attend the meetings anymore. The only way to stay connected is to attend the fest and see the legacy being carried forward,” said the TTIS Challenge loyalist who came to Bidhan Sishu Udyan, the venue of the fest in its eighth edition, all the way from Gariahat.

Celebrity guest Shaheb Bhattacherjee wasn’t untouched by the fest fever either. “I always wanted to participate in this fest…in dance and fashion show,” said the actor, who also stressed that it wasn’t all about winning. “I believe not everybody is a brilliant student, take me for example, but you definitely can showcase your talent given an opportunity….TTIS gives a fantastic platform.”
