Purulia, Dec. 16: Union power minister Jyotiraditya Scindia today announced that 9,000MW would be generated from Purulia’s Raghunathpur by the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan.

“An electricity production zone is being created here,” Scindia said, laying the foundation for the second of the four-phase Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station, 280km from Calcutta. Central junior minister for urban development Deepa Das Munshi and CPM MP Basudeb Acharya attended the event.

The second-phase of the Damodar Valley Corporation project is expected to be complete by 2015. The cost of the project conceived in 2005 was put at Rs 1,600 crores. But officials today said it could escalate to Rs 40,000. The stone for the first phase was laid by former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in 2007.

No Trinamul leader or representative attended the event though they were invited.
