PFC thump Dempo

Margao: Pune FC dealt a severe blow to Dempo’s ambitions as the visitors recorded a stunning 5-1 victory in a 11th round I-League encounter at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Saturday.

James Moga scored a brace while Izumi Arata, Jeje Lalpekhlua and Douhou Pierre struck towards the closing stages of the match. For Dempo, Joaquim Abranches’ delightful goal off a free-kick was the sole bright spot.

Pune FC were the first to draw blood when Moga showed great skill and strength to meet a through ball from Othallo Tabia and then slam the ball between the legs of Dempo goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury in the 14th minute.

Moga had a chance to make it 2-0 but his header from close sailed over.

Abranches brought Dempo back in the game in the 19th minute when his stunning freekick from almost 30 yards zoomed into the goal, leaving everyone, including Pune FC goalkeeper Abhra Mondal, stunned.

The second session saw the visitors turn the tables on their rivals with an attacking display that left Dempo shattered.

Moga put Pune FC ahead for the second time in the match when Paite’s defence splitting ball was finished with complete ease by the African import.

Dempo threw in Nigerian striker Koko Sakibo but it were Pune FC who were scoring all the goals.

Pune FC made it 3-1 in the 72nd minute when Arata was at the right end of Moga’s header to slam the ball past Subhasish while substitute striker Jeje capitalised on a defensive lapse to inflict more misery on the hosts.

There was more towards the end as Douhou helped himself to a goal after Moga had picked him up beautifully just inside the danger zone.
