Calcutta, Dec. 15: Berger Paints, the city-based paint maker, is planning to strengthen its presence in Europe by exporting solvent-based paints from India.
Abhijit Roy, managing director of Berger, said the company had started exporting to Russia and Poland where it had its own subsidiaries.
“We have recently started exporting solvent-based paints to Europe. We already have operations in Russia and Poland and we can leverage them to some extent,” Roy said while launching theme-based decorative paints in the city.
He said the firm was looking to take advantage of the production cost differential between Europe and Russia. “We have advantages of cheap labour and raw materials, particularly pigments. So, even after adding duties and freight cost, we are reasonably competitive,” he explained, adding that the firm was eyeing exports worth Rs 4 crore by the end of this year.
In Poland, the paint maker acquired a 100 per cent stake in Bolix SA in 2008, while the operation of its Russian subsidiary — Berger Paints Overseas Ltd — was commissioned in 2007.
