A Phoolbagan resident was arrested on Thursday night for fraudulently withdrawing money from a railway employee’s account.
Uttam Singh, the accused, had allegedly introduced himself as a senior official of a nationalised bank to Asim Mukherjee, the Silchar-based rail employee, and promised to help him secure a Rs 5 lakh personal loan.
“Singh took a cheque for Rs 15,000 from Mukherjee, another cheque for Rs 450 to generate his credit report and a third cheque for Rs 250 as processing fee,” said a police officer.
According to cops, Singh withdrew Rs 4,44,500 from Mukherjee’s account by modifying the Rs 450 cheque, which the railway employee had not filled properly.
Mukherjee lodged a complaint with police on September 4 after the money was transferred from his account to an unknown one.
Singh, who has been remanded in police custody till December 24, probably defrauded several others, said joint commissioner (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
