Mumbai, Dec. 13: Shaheen Dhada and Rinu Shrinivasan, who were arrested over a Facebook comment for questioning the shutdown on the day Bal Thackeray was cremated, will attend a discussion on freedom of speech and expression at IIM Ahmedabad.
Professor Anil K. Gupta, who has invited the two young women for the informal interaction on December 21, said the institute wanted to “boost” their morale. “We have invited them to say that we are with them in what they have done.”
The two, who have since been released, had been arrested under various sections, including 66 (A) of the Information Technology Act. A public interest petition later challenged in the Supreme Court the legality of the section, resulting in the government issuing an advisory on its implementation.
The November 19 arrests also led to the suspension of two police officers and the transfer of a judge.
Gupta told The Telegraph he has sent a note to the B-school’s student and faculty committee to attend the discussion. “They did not abuse or cause any injury but just expressed a view they had,” he said, adding the families of both had confirmed they would attend the session.
