The secretary of St Xavier’s School, Jamshedpur — accused of caning a Class VI student for taking off his sweater on Tuesday — has gone into hiding even as his victim remains too scared to continue studying in the same cradle.
Police went searching for Sunil Singh at his Chotagovindpur residence thrice since Wednesday night, but did not find him.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of local Govindpur police station Dayanand Sah said the school secretary’s house was searched twice on Wednesday and again on Thursday morning. “On all three occasions, we were told that Sunil Singh is not present. Our team too looked inside the house, but in vain. We have informed our seniors that he is absconding,” he said.
The Telegraph, after several attempts, managed to get Singh on phone. He claimed he was very much in the city and would meet police at an appropriate time. “I have learnt that an FIR has been lodged against me. I have nothing to fear and will go to the police station myself soon,” Singh, also a senior functionary of BJP’s youth wing, said.
OC Sah pointed out that beating up someone without criminal intent was a bailable offence.
“Perhaps, the accused is consulting lawyers. We expect him to surrender by Friday. One should not expect a person of his stature to abscond for such an offence. We will keep tabs on his house and conduct another search this (Thursday) evening,” he added.
A traumatised Sahil, meanwhile, refused to go to school for the second day. “When we asked him to get ready for school, he started crying and pleaded with us not to send him. We couldn’t help but agree,” said father Dinesh Singh.
He pledged not to let his child’s tormentor go unpunished. “We may sit on a dharna in front of the school from Monday, if Sunil Singh is not arrested by then. We want police to attach his property if he is absconding,” he added.
