Naved is likely for Tiwary

Calcutta: Naved Akhtar of Town Club is likely to replace the injured Manoj Tiwary when the selectors select the Bengal squad for the Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad, which begins on Saturday.

Veer Pratap Singh is also expected to return to the squad in place of Ashok Dinda, who is on national duty.

“Naved has been among runs in local cricket… So we want to give him a chance in the squad. However, it is unlikely that he will get a chance in the first XI. In all probability, Sandipan Das will feature in place of Manoj in the first XI. But Veer Pratap will surely make a comeback in the side,” a selector said.

Apart from selecting the squad, the selectors are also expected to take stock of the pathetic performance of the side in the ongoing season. In six matches thus far, Bengal have lost three matches, eking out draws in the remaining three.

It was learnt that the selectors are extremely disappointed with coach Woorkeri Raman. The fact that Raman returned to the city on Tuesday, soon after the team lost their match against Saurashtra, did not go down well with the selectors.

“After the team lost against Saurashtra, the coach should have stayed with the team and encouraged the players. This sort of behaviour is not acceptable. With only two matches remaining, the team needs to buck up. We have provided the coach with everything and accepted his demands. Now, we want some answers,” one of the selectors said.

The captain, Manoj, has already been ruled out for about six weeks with an injury. Now, the coach is on a rough pitch. Not everything is right with Bengal cricket.
