CM to open gallery by the Lakes

The art gallery by Rabindra Sarobar

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday will inaugurate an art gallery that will house select idols that were worshipped in the city this Durga Puja.

Metro had earlier reported that a warehouse at Rabindra Sarobar has been cleared to make way for the art gallery. It was also reported that urban development minister Firhad Hakim was to inaugurate the gallery but the inauguration was postponed because the chief minister wanted to do it herself.

Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar and Aroop Biswas — who are themselves organisers of community pujas in their respective localities — will be present with the chief minister during the programme on Wednesday.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and local MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay also feature in the list of invitees, said sources.

Nine idols have been chosen for preservation in the 3,000sq ft space — those of Bosepukur Sitala Mandir, Naktala Udayan Sangha, Chetla Agrani, Barisha Club, 95 Pally in Jodhpur Park, Nalin Sarkar Street Sarbojanin, Netaji Sporting Club in Lake Town, Sikdarbagan and Telengabagan.

Outside, there will be the Raktabij demon that welcomed visitors to the Shibmandir Puja and some exhibits from the Lake Town Adhibasibrinda pandal.

“As of now, we are calling it The Warehouse,” said Vivek Bharadwaj, the CEO of the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority, which is in charge of developing the lake.
