Darjeeling, Dec. 11: Hundreds of travellers were left stranded at Sonada for three hours this afternoon when the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha blocked NH55 to protest the arrest of three supporters in connection with an attack on a GNLF sympathiser.
The road blockade that started at 3pm was lifted around 6pm.
“The highway has been blocked by Morcha supporters at Sonada to protest the arrest the police made today. There was an incident at Sonada where a person had been attacked with a khukuri. We have made arrests accordingly,” said Kunal Aggarwal, the superintend of police of Darjeeling.
Sources said Istai Tamang, 28, known to be a GNLF supporter, had been attacked with a khukuri at Saraswati dhara in Sonada yesterday.
“Istai was attacked while he was returning home from a Kurseong court where he had gone to attend a hearing. Today, police arrested Jogesh Rai, 28, Lendhup Tamang, 32, and Prabhakar Rai, 30, for their alleged involvement in the case,” said a police source.
Following the arrests, the Morcha supporters staged a road blockade and burned tyres on the highway.
All shops at Sonada and Kurseong downed shutters in the evening to protest the arrests.
