Imphal, Dec. 9: Echel Club of Jiribam in Imphal East defeated Youth Welfare Club of Thambalkhong, also of Imphal East, by 3-0 goals in the qualifying round of the 56th Sir Churachand Memorial Football Tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung today.
Kh. Tomba of Youth Welfare was expelled from the match in the second half after he was booked with two yellow cards in the 38th and 45th minutes. Kh. Rahul and M. Aboy of the same team were also shown yellow cards in the 41st and 12th minutes respectively.
The first half remained goalless, though both the teams fought hard to open the accounts.
The second half was dominated by Echel Club.
Alzairem of Echel Club opened the account in the second half in the 62nd minute.
In quick succession, C. Lalringam scored two goals to increase the tally to three in the 65th and 69th minutes.
Both the teams indulged in rough play, compelling the referee to show yellow cards to two players of Echel Club —Lalringam and and K. Lulun — as well.
Inter-district chess: A 12-member contingent will represent the GTC Chess Foundation in the 36th All-Assam Inter-District Chess Tournament to be held at the Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Dibrugarh, from December 17 to 26. The state teams for the various age group national championships to be held next year will be selected from the same meet.
