Dhubri, Dec. 9: Four persons, three of the same family, died and 14 were injured when a Winger van collided head on with a truck on National Highway 37 at Paharkata under Agia police station of Goalpara district last night.
The injured, including three minors, were first admitted in Goalpara civil hospital, 10km from the mishap site and then 12 of them were shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital this morning.
Two of the injured are undergoing treatment in Goalpara civil hospital, a police source said.
The victims were identified as Sayeed Zaman, 40, Safiul Alom, 10, Sofia Begum, 35 — belonged to the same family, and Firoz Uddin Ahmed, 28, of Boko under Kamrup district.
A police source in Agia said the Winger was going to Lakhipur from Boko when it collided with a truck bearing a West Bengal number at Paharkata.
“The truck was on the left side of the road while the van, which was coming from opposite direction, hit the truck,” the source added.
Agia police station officer-in-charge Kanak Chandra Bharali said he had found 18 passengers from the van. Two of them died in Goalpara civil hospital while two died on their way to Guwahati today.
Preliminary investigation showed it the truck driver was not at fault as he was on the left side of the road and it was Winger van, which hit the truck, he added.
Bharali, however, said the driver of the van might have hit the truck because of poor visibility, as there was heavy fog last night.
The driver and handyman of the truck are absconding while the driver of the Winger was seriously injured, he said.
Goalpara superintendent of police Shyamal Saikia said an inquiry was being carried into the reason behind accident. But there was no doubt that the Winger van hit the truck head-on, which led to mishap, he added.
