Indians lose 0-3

Melbourne: An injury-hit India side proved no match to defending champions Australia as they lost 0-3 in a semi-final clash on Saturday and will now have to fight it out for a bronze in the Champions Trophy hockey tournament.

Australia stayed on course for their fifth successive title, setting up a final against Olympic silver medallists the Netherlands, who outplayed Pakistan 5-2 in the other semi-final. For India, captain Sardara Singh, Manpreet Singh and SV Sunil played the game despite suffering from injuries.

India’s dream run came to an end, but they stayed in contention for their first Champions Trophy medal in three decades. India will take on Pakistan, on Sunday for the bronze medal.

It was a day of misses for India, as Sardara also missed out on the FIH player of the year award . (PTI)
