The owners of all 17 minibuses on route 125 — between Dey’s Medical and Howrah station — withdrew their vehicles on Thursday after a section of the staff backed by Trinamul refused to collect new fares unless their wages were hiked.
The wage hike demand, within three weeks the latest fare change, has triggered fears that it might spread to other routes. A minibus operator pleaded inability to hike the wages because of the marginal increase in fares the government had allowed. A large number of buses, too, have gone off the road citing “inadequate” hike in fares.
