CPM on card? Change it

Halisahar, Dec. 6: A school sports meet in North 24-Parganas was deferred by a day and fresh invitation cards printed after Mukul Roy’s son, a Trinamul MLA, allegedly objected to a CPM leader presiding over the event.

Subhrangshu Roy, the Bijpur MLA, has denied involvement in the episode.

The inter-school sports meet in Halisahar was held today instead of yesterday. The name of Rabindranath Mukherjee, the CPM chief of the Halisahar municipality, was struck off the new invitation card that was printed in haste after Subhrangshu objected, said sources in the primary schools’ sports organising committee.

“Subhrangshu became furious to see Mukherjee’s name on the card and refused to accept it,” a primary school teacher said. The sources said Subhrangshu refused to share the dais with Mukherjee and told the organisers to drop his name from the card and print a fresh one.

Subhrangshu said: “I was just invited to the programme as the chief guest. How do I know whom the organisers invited?”

Mukherjee said he felt insulted. “They had requested me to preside over the programme. I felt insulted at the way my name was dropped. School sports is not the place to play politics,” he said.
