Easy win for Surya

Calcutta: Surya Sekhar Ganguly eased past Alexander Fominyh of Russia in the third round of Open International Chess Tournament, organised by Alekhine Chess Club, on Wednesday. He took only 35 moves to beat his opponent.

Apart from Ganguly, seven other local challengers — Sandipan Chanda, Deep Sengupta, Saptarshi Roy, Diptayan Ghosh, Sayantan Das, Argyadip Das and Mary Ann Gomes — also registered fine victories.

However, Nisha Mohota eked out a draw and Suvrajit Saha lost to Egyptian Adly Ahmed.

Shardul Gagare, the 15-year-old boy from Maharashtra, continued his good run as he held Sahaj Grover.

In other matches, Deepan Chakravarthy held top seed Radoslaw Wojtaszek, while second seed Anton Korobov of Ukraine defeated Akshayraj Kore.

Dzhumaev Marat defeated Stany G.A. to become the sole leader after the third day with three points.

Aditya Udeshi and Arvindh Chithabaram came up with other notable results of the day. While Aditya held Daniil Linchevski Arvindh drew with Abhijit Kunte.
