Tease tragedy

Mumbai, Dec. 5: A 19-year-old who was the sole breadwinner of his family died after being stabbed when he protested eve-teasers targeting a neighbour.

Four of Santosh Vichivara’s killers are minor boys while another is 18 years old.

Santosh, working as a shop attendant to support his cancer-stricken mother and two school-going siblings, had just stepped off a bus near his Dombivili home on Monday night when he saw the five boys pass comments at the girl and pester for her cellphone number.

“Santosh confronted them. It resulted in a fight. One of them had a folding knife and stabbed him in his heart,” said inspector Indrajit Karle.

Other neighbours, alerted by the girl, arrived at the spot soon and rushed Santosh to hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.

The boys fled but were arrested today. The four minors have been sent to a juvenile home, while the other was remanded in police custody till December 10.

Under juvenile laws, the four could be put in a juvenile home for a maximum of three years if convicted.

“The boys are vagabonds. Two of them are school dropouts while one is a student. They say they had kept a knife with them to kill birds,” another police officer said.
