Field fun

Army Public School

Folk dances, karate, yoga and of course, pompoms — twinkle toes and fast feet made the annual athletics meet of Army Public School, Ranchi, a colourful bash on Tuesday. If the girls set the sprawling greens on fire with dances like Nepal’s gorkhali (left) and Punjab’s bhangra, an agile display of asanas (right) left the spectators spellbound.

The meet, which was declared open by chief guest Major General Sanjeev Verma, kicked off with a march past. As many as 400 students from classes I to XI marched in perfect synchronisation with the school band keeping them company. This was followed by a series of track and field events, which included fun items like spoon-and-marble and three-legged races and 100m run and 400m relay. Students of four houses — Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu, Tagore and Mother Teresa — vied with each other to touch the finishing line first.

“Along with education, sports play an equally important role in developing a student’s overall personality. It should be made a part of the curriculum,” felt Major General Verma, heaping praise on the school authorities for offering such a huge platform to the students to showcase their talent.

The overall championship was bagged by Sarojini Naidu house.
