Around 300 students of the Government College of Art and Craft gheraoed the institutionís officer-in-charge, Jayanta Chowdhury, for four hours on Tuesday demanding his resignation.

Police rescued Chowdhury around 9.30pm following a distress call from him.

ďWe went to him around 5.15pm for answers to some of our questions, but he refused to talk to us. We decided not to leave the campus without hearing the answers,Ē said a student.

The students alleged that Chowdhury was not taking any initiative to form the teachersí council, which frames the exam and class schedule, and the studentsí body. He has also been accused of being negligent in bringing funds from agencies, such as the UGC.

Chowdhury, appointed to the post in May, denied the charges, saying a section of the teachers had forced the students to gherao him.

ďThe teachers are upset because I am trying to run the college in a transparent manner,Ē said Chowdhury.
