Around 300 students of the Government College of Art and Craft gheraoed the institution’s officer-in-charge, Jayanta Chowdhury, for four hours on Tuesday demanding his resignation.

Police rescued Chowdhury around 9.30pm following a distress call from him.

“We went to him around 5.15pm for answers to some of our questions, but he refused to talk to us. We decided not to leave the campus without hearing the answers,” said a student.

The students alleged that Chowdhury was not taking any initiative to form the teachers’ council, which frames the exam and class schedule, and the students’ body. He has also been accused of being negligent in bringing funds from agencies, such as the UGC.

Chowdhury, appointed to the post in May, denied the charges, saying a section of the teachers had forced the students to gherao him.

“The teachers are upset because I am trying to run the college in a transparent manner,” said Chowdhury.
