Sayantan shines

Calcutta: City lad Sayantan Das held GM Sahaj Grover to a draw in the first round of Open International Chess tournament, that got underway, here, at Gorky Sadan on Monday.

Sayantan, who is the national sub-junior champion, played well with the white pieces to win an exchange with Grover struggling in the middle game. However, Grover kept himself in the game by winning a pawn. As the time pressure was approaching, Sayantan decided to play it safe and proposed the draw, which was accepted by Grover.

In another match, city player Surya Sekhar Ganguly was forced to split the point with BS Shivananda. Sandipan Chanda, the other star from the city, also had to split points with young IM Shiven Khosla.
