Three die in bus mishap

Jajpur, Dec. 3: Three people were killed when a private mini bus in which they were travelling overturned and skidded off the road on NH-215 near Andhari Chhak in Jajpur district today.

Fifteen people suffered injuries, eight of them seriously, in the accident that occurred at a place that falls in Korei police limits.

Three people, including the bus conductor, died on the spot while all the injured have been hospitalised at the Area Hospital on Jajpur Road. Later, eight of the seriously injured were moved to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack when their condition deteriorated.

The passengers belonged to Keonjhar district.

The deceased were identified as Santosh Kumar Moharana, 44, bus conductor and resident of Nuapatana village, Laxmidhar Chakra of Pandua village, both in Keonjhar district and Bipin Kumar Routray, 17, of Korabandi village in the district.

Police said the bus was carrying passengers from Jajpur Road to Keshdurapal in neighbouring Keonjhar district when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned and skidded off the road around 2pm.

One of the injured persons, Bijay Rana, who is undergoing treatment at Area Hospital, said: “The bus started off from Jajpur Road this afternoon and I sat in the cabin seat. The bus was speeding and going towards Ramachandrapur. Suddenly, a stray cow crossed the road near Andhari Chhak. The driver pressed the brakes to save the cow and lost control of the vehicle. ”

Hearing screams, people reached the spot and took the injured to the hospital, the eyewitness said.Korei police station inspector-in-charge Purna Chandra Patayat said: “The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. We have impounded the bus and are investigating into the matter.”
