Arrest foils murder plot

Eight associates of gangster Bindu Singh were on Monday arrested in the city while they were on their way to murder a jail warden, police said.

Bindu is at present lodged in Bhagalpur Central Jail in following a failed attempt to kill Beur Central Jail jailor Amarjeet Singh around four months ago.

The associates of Bindu had gathered at one of his houses in the Kankerbagh area. They left the house around afternoon to eliminate Phulwari sub-divisional jail warden Chattan Singh when a team of policemen caught them, Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amrit Raj said.

Deepak Dayal and Chotu Singh were leading the eight-member gang, the SSP said, adding that the duo were also involved in the bid to eliminate the jailor. Deepak and Chotu had shot at the Beur Central Jail jailor outside the prison campus on July 27. They missed the target and the bullet hit a boy on his leg. Deepak and Chotu were arrested and recently released on bail from the Phulwari jail. Chattan Singh was earlier posted in the Beur jail, when Bindu was there. Bindu had decided to kill him and entrusted Dayal and Chotu with the task. The arrest of the eight persons is a major breakthrough because they had planned to kill the warden today, Raj said.

Three country-made pistols, five cartridges, three motorbikes and 12 mobiles were found on the eight criminals. We are interrogating them. We have to find out the details of the plan they had hatched and how Bindu passed on instructions to them from behind the bars, another police officer said.

In another incident, a team of the city police caught Babloo Singh for allegedly masterminding the murder of Baby Devi, the head of Gork-hari panchayat in Bikram on the outskirts of Patna on July 27. Baby was gunned down in presence of her relatives, including her husband.
