Calcutta, Dec. 3: Humayun Kabir, the Congress MLA who defected to Trinamul last month, has filed a police complaint accusing an aide of junior railway minister Adhir Chowdhury of issuing murder threats over phone.
Kabir, who was made the minister of state for animal resource development in the cabinet shuffle on November 21, today said: “A Congress worker called me up several times on November 17 and threatened that I would be murdered and my body thrown into the Bhagirathi.”
The threat, he added, came a day after he resigned from all Congress posts he held in Murshidabad’s Rejinagar.
“I have named Monaem Sheikh in my complaint on November 17. But police are yet to taken action against him,” Kabir said.
Sheikh is a Congress worker and a partner in Chowdhury’s construction business. He is known to be close to the minister. Kabir, who was also involved in the business, fell out with the Murshidabad strongman after he allegedly sidelined him.
District superintendent of police Humayun Kabir said the minister had lodged a complaint at Rejinagar police station. “The police have started a case of issuing threats,” the SP said.
The Murshidabad Congress termed the allegations baseless.
“The complaint has been lodged after instructions from the leaders of his new party. Kabir is trying to gain people’s sympathy. He knows that he will not be able win the bypoll from Rejinagar,” said Ashok Das, general secretary of the district Congress and Chowdhury loyalist.
Kabir said he had requested chief minister Mamata Banerjee for additional security.
“I have informed the chief minister that a conspiracy is on to kill me. A section of Congress workers is after my life. I have informed the local police and the district police superintendent,” he said.
Asked about Kabir’s demand for additional security, the SP said: “He (Kabir) is given security as a minister of state is supposed to get. I have not been told anything about any additional security.”
Ever since Kabir’s defection to Trinamul, Chowdhury has been lambasting the minister in public meetings in the district. Chowdhury had twice labelled Kabir a “betrayer”.
Chowdhury had also said that the Congress will win the bypoll in Rejinagar despite Kabir’s resignation as the MLA of the constituency.
