Fresh arrest in Gadapani case

Dhubri, Dec. 2: Dilwar Hussain, an accused in the Gadapani Pathak killing, was arrested by Bengal police yesterday and will be brought to Assam in a couple of days.

Hussain was arrested from Uttar Pakhiriguri village un-der Kumargram police station in Jalpaiguri district for his involvement in cases of murder and truck robberies there.

An Assam police source said Hussain would be arrested in the Gadapani case and they hoped that it would throw light on the involvement of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) in Pathak’s death and the abduction of Gauripur agriculture department engineer, Faizul Islam.

It is suspected that KLO activists killed superintendent engineer Pathak and abducted engineer Faizul Islam on May 2 this year in Bongaigaon district.

A police team from Bongaigaon rushed to Alipurduar in Jalpaiguri district to take custody of Hussain against cases lodged in Abhayapuri police station, sources said.

Hussain, Pathak’s driver, also allegedly has connections with Ulfa, NDFB and KLO in the lower Assam districts and Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri districts of Bengal. Hussain was also wanted by Bengal police in several cases of murder, vehicle theft and highway robberies, a police source in Abhayapuri said.

A senior police officer in Bongaigaon said apart from his alleged involvement in the case, Hussain has a number of cases registered against him in Srirampur police station of Kokrajhar and Barobhisa police station in Jalpaiguri district of Bengal.

Bongaigaon superintendent of police Nitul Gogoi said Hussain would be brought to Abhayapuri in a couple of days from Alipurduar as Bongaigaon police sought his custody in connection with a case registered against him here.

“Hussain will be arrested and interrogated. His arrest will throw light on the involvement of the KLO,” Gogoi said.
