Tram kills 8-year-old

The death of an eight-year old boy under the wheels of a tram in Maniktala triggered a backlash from residents in the form of a roadblock and ransacking of another tram on Sunday morning.

Tapas Dolui, 8, was playing with friends on a pavement along CIT Scheme Road around 10.30am when the tram hit him. “The tram dragged him some distance. Residents took him to RG Kar hospital, where he was declared dead,” said a resident. Residents blocked the road for 15 minutes and ransacked another tram.

Airport arrest

A passenger was arrested at the airport on Sunday for allegedly carrying a bullet in his handbag. Arya Basu, 29, was about to take a flight to Bangkok.

Postponed

The Samman Samaroh function of the Rajasthan Foundation, Calcutta Chapter, scheduled for December 4 has been postponed following the demise of former Prime Minister I.K. Gujral. Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot was supposed to attend the function.
