Death after assault in Digha lodge

Tamluk, Dec. 2: A youth was found with his head smashed in a Digha lodge this morning and died in hospital an hour later but the hotel failed to furnish a copy of his photo identity proof.

Police said the 25-year-old youth had checked into Madhabi Lodge with a girl who he introduced as his wife on November 30 and the couple were given a room without being asked to produce an identity document.

The youth was today found unconscious in the bathroom in a pool of blood after employees noticed blood dripping from one of the pipes. There was no trace of the girl.

According to the police, several small hotels on the outskirts of Digha flouted the administration’s orders of checking the ID documents.

Ajit Jha, the officer in charge of Digha police station, said the couple had mentioned their names as Abdul Kalam and Anisha Begum from Burdwan. The lodge’s owner, Manik Jana, said the youth had stayed in his hotel earlier and had told him this time that he would give a photocopy of voter card while paying the bill.
