Calcutta, Dec. 2: All six Congress MPs from Bengal, party president Pradip Bhattacharya and Congress Legislature Party chief Mohammed Sohrab have been called to Delhi for an “emergency meeting” on Tuesday to discuss the party’s strategy for the panchayat polls due next year.
Shakeel Ahmed, the AICC Bengal in-charge, said: “An emergency meeting with key Bengal leaders is necessary to assess the status of our organisation after we severed ties with Mamataji’s Trinamul. We also have to work out a strategy for the coming panchayat polls.”
The Congress minority cell chief S.M.S Haider will leave for Delhi tomorrow to brief the high command about “the growing disenchantment among a section of Muslims with Trinamul” because of the state government’s failure to fulfil promises made to them.
Haider cited the government’s inability to clear the backlog in the payment of honorarium to more than 20,000 imams and 16,000 odd muezzins as one of the reasons.
