EB slip to 2nd place

Calcutta/Shillong: Kingfisher East Bengal and Lajong FC shared a point each as their I-League match ended in a goalless draw at the JM Sports Complex, Shillong, on Saturday.

In another match at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Dempo SC left it late to edge past Salgaocar FC 2-1.

Rohan Ricketts scored an impressive goal to give Dempo the lead but Salgaocar fought back and equalised in the second session through Australian striker Sean Rooney. Ryuji Sueoka then scored the winner for Dempo just six minutes before time.

As a result, Dempo went past leaders East Bengal with 22 points from nine matches. East Bengal are placed second with 21 points after playing an identical number of matches.

The match between Pailan Arrows and ONGC at the Salt Lake Stadium ended in favour of the hosts.

Deepak Devrani, Holicharan Narzary, Milan Singh and Alwyn George scored a goal each for the AIFF’s developmental side. Eric Brown got the lone goal for ONGC.

Talking about the East Bengal-Lajong match, the visitors failed to pose any threat to the opponent defence. That the hosts kept East Bengal’s strikers at bay was because of the brilliant performance of the Korean defender Minchol Son, who was adjudged Man of the Match.

After a morale-boosting win against Arrows, Lajong started with a positive intent. But the profligacy of their strikers — Gbeneme Friday and Sushil Kumar — did not help their cause.

The only moment that East Bengal came close to break the deadlock was in the 54th minute when Lalrindika Ralte spurned a one on one chance.

In the 88th minute of the game, Sushil could have scored the winner, but East Bengal’s goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu averted the danger.
