Bagan falter

- Dempo register 3-0 win; Lajong beat Arrows
Bagan’s Mehrajuddin Wadoo, in action, on Wednesday

Margao: Defending champions Dempo SC thrashed 10-men McDowell Mohun Bagan 3-0 in an eighth round I-League match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Wednesday. Joaquim Abranches (40th), Ryuji Sueoka (44th) and Godwin Franco (70th) scored one apiece for Dempo.

The win took Dempo to 19 points and the Goan side are placed second behind East Bengal. Bagan dropped to the sixth place and are on 11 points.

In another match at Shillong, Sushil Singh scored a brace to help Lajong FC defeat Pailan Arrows 3-1. The other goal was scored by Gbeneme Friday. For Arrows, D. Ganesh scored in the 65th minute.

Despite injuries to key players — midfielder Climax Lawrence and striker Koko Sakibo — Dempo gave a good performance and could have taken the lead in the 4th minute when Godwin rattled the crossbar off a free kick.

Three minutes later, Abranches failed to score as he headed straight into the hands of ’keeper Shilton Paul off a cross from Clifford Miranda.

Bagan had their first chance in the 10th minute when Okolie Odafe set up CS Sabeeth on top of the Dempo box. But Sabeeth failed to hit the target. Off the next move, Bagan’s Biswajit Saha shot wide over from the left side of the box.

Dempo surged in the lead in the 40th minute. India U-22 winger substitute Romeo Fernandes ran down the right flank and essayed a low cross which was tapped in by striker Joaquim Abranches.

The second goal came in the 44th minute. Peter Carvalho was brought down by Nirmal Chetri inside the Bagan box. The referee pointed to the dreaded spot and Suoeka made no mistake.

Dempo added one more to their tally in the second half in the 70th minute when Godwin Franco blasted in a long-ranger from around 30 yards.

Changing over, Biswajit received his second yellow card of the match after mistiming his tackle on Gowdin in the 52nd minute and was given marching orders.

Dempo made the most of the situation as they controlled the pace of the game.

Dempo coach Armando Colaco introduced Rohan Ricketts in place of Miranda in the 60th minute.

Ricketts created an impact in the match immediately. He almost scored with his first touch of the ball but Shilton managed to keep his left-footer away.

Franco’s 30-yard shot sealed the match for Dempo in the 70th minute. It was another sorry day for Bagan.
