Suranjita causes major upset

Guwahati, Nov. 28: Third seed Suranjita Saikia of Assam caused an upset while top seed Assam girl Priyana Kalita survived a scare on the third day of the India Club-AITA under-16 Championship Series Tennis Tournament at India Club here today.

In an exciting girls’ singles semi-final match, Suranjita shocked second seed Shilpi S. Das of Odisha 6-4, 7-5 to be the first upset of the ongoing tournament.On the other hand, Priyana Kalita overcame stiff challenge from fourth seed Gujarat girl Rutvi Shah for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 semi-final victory.

All the boys’ singles seeded players had a cakewalk over their opponents into the semi-finals.

Top seed B.R. Nikshep of Karnataka eased past Ankeet Kashyap of Assam 6-1, 6-1 while second seed Parikshit Somani of Assam got the better of Ashwin Dhanaswami of Tamil Nadu 6-2, 6-2 and third seed Ishaque Eqbal of Bengal defeated Assam opponent Santosh Acharya 6-2, 6-1. Fourth seed Bijoy Kumar Mohanty prevailed over Archis Borthakur 6-3, 6-2 in an all-Assam fourth quarter-final.

Assam team: The Assam Cricket Association on today named the state team for the Cooch Behar Trophy under-19 tournament match against Jammu and Kashmir to be played from December to December 4 at Barsapara stadium here.
