Cycle thief held in Visva hostel

Santiniketan, Nov. 28: Students at a Visva-Bharati hostel today chased and caught a youth trying to run away with a bicycle and locked him up in a room for two hours before varsity guards persuaded them to hand him over.

The thief, who said his name was Rajesh Hajra, tried to run away when the students brought him out of the room. The private varsity guards chased him for about 100 yards and then nabbed him. Rajesh was handed over to police.

Today’s theft attempt in the Vidya Bhavan hostel comes amid several reports of stealing from various residential rooms in the past two weeks.

Today, a postgraduate student noticed a boy in yellow T-shirt tampering with the lock of a bicycle. When the boy started running with the bike, he alerted others in the hostel.

“Some other students and I rushed down to catch him. He was caught before he could get out of the main gate by another group of students getting into the hostel,” said Jamshed Ali Khan, an MA first year student.

Bicycles are the preferred mode of transport in Visva-Bharati. Students use them because “it is economical and doesn’t need any fuel”.

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen was seen riding a bicycle till some years ago when in the town.

The varsity security officer Supriya Ganguly said: “We have stepped up vigil and patrolling on the campus.”
