Assam girls make merry

- Minu, Bhagyawati, Anita and Anjali punch their way into semis

Guwahati, Nov. 27: It was a field day today for Assam girls in the 13th Womenís Senior National Boxing Championship under way at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi indoor stadium here.

Assam girls Minu Basumatary, Bhagyawati Kachari, Anita Kahar and Anjali Muchahary made it to the semi-finals along with Mizoram girl Jenny R.L.

While Minu and Bhagyawati blanked their opponents Storia Teron of Meghalaya 10-0 in light welter weight (60-64kg) and Amandeep Kaur of Punjab 11-0 in light heavy weight (75-81kg) respectively when referees stopped play, Anita tamed Nagaland opponent T. Temsunaro Tsudir 31-4 in light fly weight (45-50 kg) in the quarter-finals played today.

Anjali beat Sarika Kumari of Jharkhand 11-2 in a bout that lasted only one round before the referee stopped play.

Assam girl Namita Kachari, however, went down to Rajasthan opponent Seema 17-27 in welter weight (64-69 kg) quarterfinals. Indian international Jenny knocked out Kerala opponent Sini S. Sugathan 3-0 in the first round.

In other quarter-finals of the day, Rebecca Lalinmawii of Mizoram beat Usha Rai of Sikkim 21-5 and Sh. Sarjubala Devi of Manipur beat A. Punyavathi of Andhra Pradesh 17-10 in light fly weight. while Merrlyng Tongwah of Meghalaya went down to Roshini Subba of Sikkim 24-36 and Vanlal Duati of Mizoram lost to Pinky Jangra of Railways 5-11 in fly weight (48-51 kg).

Another Manipur girl, E. Meinthoi Devi, lost against Suman of All India Police 7-26 in light welter weight.

L. Tombiamcha Devi of Manipur was also blanked out 0-9 by Pooja of Railways in the middle weight (69-75 kg) quarter-finals. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow.


Kamrup body-builders Dhiraj Rajbanshi and Pranab Langthasa emerged Mr Assam senior and junior respectively in the All Assam Body-Building Championship held at Tinsukia on Sunday.
