Guwahati, Nov. 26: Seeds had a smooth sail to book semi-final berths on the first day of the India Club-AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament at the India Club courts here today.
Boys’ under-16 top seed B.R. Nikshep of Karnataka blanked Assam boy Anish Sonowal 6-0, 6-0 while second seed Assam boy Bijoy Mohanty faced some challenge from Sidharth Choudhary of Assam before clinching a 6-4, 7-5 win in the first round.
In the girls’ under-16 courts, too, top seed Priyana Kalita of Assam eased past Anwesha Sarma, also from Assam, 6-1, 6-1.
Assam girls Lenin Jamir and Maitry Phukan also had a roller coaster ride in the first round. Jamir tamed Aikai Talom of Arunachal Pradesh 6-1, 6-0 and Phukan defeated Bhumika Gupta of Delhi 6-3, 6-0.
In the boys’ under-16 segment, Sahidul Islam, Ronit Bora, Santosh Acharya and Shakib Ahmed also booked second round berths. Subham Patra lost to Santosh Acharya 6-7(7-5), 6-2, 6-3.
