47 named in state archery squad

The state sports department on Monday announced a 47-member archery squad that will take part in the 58th School National Championship.

The national championship — organised under the banner of School Games Federation of India — will kick off in Calcutta in December end.

State officials said the squad had been selected on the basis of the performance of the archers at a two-day Jharkhand State Inter-district tournament that concluded at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Monday.

“We have tried to select the best talents. All the archers named in the squad have been picked on merit and are expected to do well in Calcutta. It is a balanced outfit,” said East Singhbhum district sports officer Sarwar Imam.

Among others, the closing ceremony of the selection trials on Monday was attended by East Singhbhum senior superintendent of police Akhilesh Kumar Jha, additional district magistrate (law and order) Ajit Shanker, sub-divisional officer Subodh Kumar and head of Tata Steel’s sports department Captain Amitabh.

The organisers said more than 300 students from various districts of Jharkhand had made their way to the city to take part in the archery competition that was played out in three categories — U-14, U-17 and U-19 categories. The event was conducted in both the Indian and Recurve sections.

The list of archers who made the cut in the boys’ U-14 Indian Round were Nepla Sijui, Suraj Jamuda, Saurabh Giri, Raja Kumbhkar with Simply Kumari, Roymuni Mundari, Anita Kumari, Pratima Chauhan making the cut in the girls’ category.

The players who made the cut in the U-19 category include the names of Mukesh Turi, Puro Minz, Kisun Sundi, Sisupal Mahto, Chinka Kumari, Sony Kumari, Subhadra Mukhi and Shilpi Kumari.
