Ladies on walk killed

Rampurhat, Nov. 25: Two middle-aged women out on a morning walk were run over and killed by a speeding truck in Birbhum’s Bolpur today.

Those killed were identified as Golapi Mondal, 45, a primary school teacher, and Chhabi Pal, 40, a small investment agent at the Bolpur post office.

Residents of Supur village said the women were close friends and used to go out for morning walk daily between 4.30am and 5am. They said the truck crushed Golapi and Chhabi around 4.45am today.

Mrinal Saha, Golapi’s younger brother, said: “My elder sister and Chhabi Pal had been close friends for a long time. They used to go out together for morning walk regularly. I cannot understand how they were run over by the truck.”

A Supur resident said the two ladies were walking on the left side of the Burdwan-Bolpur Road.

“A speeding truck from behind crushed them under its wheels. As they lay in a pool of blood, several morning walkers rushed in. One of us informed police. The police came within half an hour and removed the bodies,” the resident said.

Kashinath Pal, Chhabi’s uncle, said the police should check reckless driving on the road.

“On this stretch, a large number of residents go out for morning walk. The police should patrol the stretch in Supur to prevent reckless driving,” Kashinath, a grocer, said.

The inspector in charge of Bolpur police station, Kamal Bairagya, said: “We have sent the bodies for post-mortem.”
