Eye bank in Bokaro soon

Bokaro, Nov. 24: Bokaro General Hospital today received the nod from the state health and family welfare department to setting up its own eye bank.

The eye bank for the Bokaro Steel Limited-run hospital, which will be the first in the district, will be a boon for thousands of residents and people from Koderma, Giridih and Bermo who currently have to make their way to Ranchi, Calcutta or even to Shankar Netralaya, Chennai, for donating or pledging their eyes.

Officials said the letter of approval from the government was presented to Bokaro Steelís CEO Ashutosh Maitra by director of Bokaro General Hospital A.K. Singh in the presence of joint director of the instituteís eye department Sanjay Choudhary.

The eye bank, the first in any SAIL hospital, will match top standards and have facilities for storage and transplantation of cornea, making donations easier.

Incidentally, the 1,100 bedded Bokaro General Hospital had been trying to obtain permission for opening an eye bank for the last several years.

Apart from this, the state government today also cleared Bokaro steel plantís permission of setting up a medical college in the region.
