Betrayer salvo

Saktipur, Nov. 24: At a rally 3km from the house of Humayun Kabir, who switched to Trinamul from the Congress earlier this week, Adhir Chowdhury said the “party MLA who left the Congress only to get a berth in Mamata Banerjee’s ministry is a betrayer”.

“He has not only betrayed the Congress but also the people who had voted for him,” Behrampore Congress MP and junior railway minister Chowdhury said at a rally in Rejinagar, the Assembly constituency Kabir represented before quitting the Congress. Chowdhury, however, did not name Kabir.

At a rally held simultaneously with Chowdhury’s meeting around 3pm and 8km away, Kabir tried to defend his decision of joining Trinamul.

“I was left with no option but to leave the Congress because I could no longer bear the humiliation at the hands of the district Congress president,” Kabir said.

Party sources said around 10,000 people attended Chowdhury’s rally, more than double the number present at Kabir’s meeting.
