Smriti lifts women’s crown

Guwahati, Nov. 23: Smriti Rekha Kalita of NE TV lifted the women’s singles crown in the Arabinda Buragohain inter-media badminton championship of the 4th North East Media Sports Festival, organised by the Assam Sports Journalists Association, at Kanaklata indoor stadium here today.

She defeated Nabanita Kalita of Prime News 15-5, 15-5 for the title. Nine women participated in the event.

In the men’s singles, Sivashish Thakur of The Assam Tribune will clash with Bikramjit Singh of Manipur Press Club in the final tomorrow.

Thakur today beat N. Phillips of Manipur Press Club 21-8 in the single-setter semi-finals while Singh got the better of Randhir Sarma of The Assam Tribune 21-11. In the men’s team event, Manipur Press Club will lock horns with The Assam Tribune in the final tomorrow.

In the semi-finals played today, Manipur Press Club blanked Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati 2-0 and The Assam Tribune beat Prime News 2-0.

The chess tournament of the festival also got under way at the Gauhati Town Club auditorium here today. Defending champion Surya Lahiri led the tally along with four others — Debashish Sinha, Diganta Saharia, P. Das and Biswajit Bora — with full two points from two rounds played so far.

The event is held in five-round Swiss league format involving 19 players.

The remaining three rounds will be played from 11am tomorrow.

The Badaruddin Ahmed and Bogaram Das inter-media table tennis championship of the same fest will be held at the ABITA indoor stadium tomorrow.
