Contest craze in RU colleges

May the best talents participate. The 28th Inter-University East Zone Youth Festival barely a fortnight away, the 13 constituent colleges under Ranchi University (RU) are working overtime each to sieve its 35 finest students for an array of competitions including dance, music, rangoli, collage-making and quiz.

The deadline for completing the screening process is November 26, while the final selection trials will be held at Marwari College on November 27 and 28.

The five-day festival-cum-competition, beginning December 4, will see several hundred participants from 15 universities of eastern India hog the spotlight at the Jaipal Singh Mega Sport Complex in Hotwar, Ranchi. It is being organised by the Association of Indian Universities.

Friday saw frenetic activities at Ranchi Women’s College, as students tried their luck in various events such as quiz, Hindi and English debate, painting, collage and poster making and rangoli. “Each competition saw participation of at least 20 students. We will screen for music and dance events such as classical, vocal solo, light solo, folk, et al on November 26,” said professor Nanda Ghosh.

In quiz, 25 students participated. Their IQ was also adjudged through written tests and 10 will appear in the final selection at Marwari College.

Principal of Marwari College Umesh Chandra Mehta said 400-odd students from all the 13 colleges will participate in the final selection.

Satish Gupta, cultural co-ordinator of RU, said all cradles were on the verge of completing screenings. “From RU, around 40 participants will go the east zone festival,” he added.
