Ranchi, Nov. 23: A Rs 7 crore corpus meant for the police will now be used in four districts, including Ranchi and Dhanbad, to build residential accommodation for the force.
According to additional director-general of police (modernisation and training) B.B. Pradhan, the funds were received from the Centre sometime back. The money would now be used in the chosen districts — Giridih, Lohardaga too — to build family quarters and police hostels.
This decision was taken after chief secretary S.K. Choudhary chaired a meeting of a state-level empowered committee for modernisation of Jharkhand police this afternoon. Pradhan said the state had received the Centre’s consent on the diversion of funds.
Police modernisation funds have courted several controversies in Jharkhand, primarily for its alleged misuse.
In 2004-05, the CAG pulled up the Jharkhand government for diverting and misusing police funds. It pointed to the purchase of several cars, like Ford Endeavour and Maruti Baleno, worth Rs 15.70 crore for VIP use.
These funds, the CAG noted, were meant for the construction of police lines in Deoghar and Lohardaga districts and replacement of condemned police vehicles.
