New Delhi, Nov. 22: Tax authorities are probing chocolate maker Cadbury for alleged tax evasion of as much as Rs 200 crore.
“Two cases of tax evasion by Cadbury India Ltd have been detected by the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence during the years 2009-10 to 2012-13, up to October 31, 2012,” S.S. Palanimanickam, minister of state for finance, informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply today.
According to officials, senior Cadbury executives had allegedly bribed government officials to wrongfully claim “area-based exemption” for its Baddi unit in Himachal Pradesh.
Excise department officials and the management of Cadbury’s parent Kraft are leading the probe.
