Block after train runs over man

Durgapur, Nov. 22: Several Calcutta and Delhi-bound trains got delayed by at least two hours because of a track blockade near Asansol following an accident.

Residents blocked the Delhi-bound grand chord in Barachak near Asansol station after a factory worker was run over by the Calcutta-bound Lal Quila Express.

Witnesses said Jharkhand resident Banti Tandi, 24, had got off a train at Barachak station around 8am and was crossing the tracks to take a short cut to the factory in Asansol’s Kanyapur where he works. He did not notice the train and was run over.

The passengers first blocked the tracks demanding another exit point of the footbridge on the side of the down slow line. Soon many residents gathered and joined them.

They tracks were blocked for over three hours from 8.30am, prompting the railway authorities in the Asansol division to stop at least 12 trains at several stations.

Some of the trains that got stranded were the Howrah-bound Kalka Mail and Amritsar Mail, the Delhi-bound Poorva Express and the Dhanbad-bound Black Diamond and Double Decker Express. The trains were stopped at Asansol, Raniganj, Durgapur, Sitarampur and Chittaranjan stations.
