Two die in brawl over chicken

Keonjhar, Nov. 21: Two persons, including a woman, were killed and another sustained serious injuries in a brawl over buying chicken at Nipania village in Harichandanpur on Tuesday.

Four persons have been arrested for their involved in the incident. The victims have been identified as Junga Munda and Somanath.

Police said five youths had gone to the house of 42-year-old Junga Munda to buy a particular chicken. However, Junga told them it had already been sold and they would have to choose another one.

However, the youths — all in their twenties — picked up an argument with her and attacked Junga with a weapon.

Hearing Junga’s screams, her husband Sukadev rushed out of the house. Seeing his wife covered in blood, he picked up an axe and hacked one of the youths, Somanath, to death. The four others attacked Sukadev, who suffered serious injuries and is being treated at a local hospital.

Those arrested have been identified as Ramesh Hembrum, Sunaram Hembrum, Jamadar Sundi and Dibarsingh Munda.

“As soon as we were informed, we rushed to the spot and conducted raids at various hideouts of the accused. We managed to arrest all the four persons involved in the crime. We have also seized the weapons used in the murders,” said Saban Kissan, inspector in charge of Harichandanpur police station.

“We have seized the bodies and sent them to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem,” Kissan said, adding that two separate cases had been registered in this connection.

Sukadev, who is being treated at a hospital, is out of danger, he said.

The arrested were forwarded to the court and later remanded in judicial custody after their bail pleas were rejected, the police said.
