When Lee Child started us off on a string of adventures with former American military policeman Jack Reacher, little did we, or even he, imagine the gigantic heights his 17-book series would scale. Stepping off the Greyhound bus and into his very first adventure, Jack Reacher was an instant hit among thriller lovers with the British author’s debut novel Killing Floor.

That was 1997. Some 15 years on, Reacher is all set to hit the big screen. The India date is January 4, 2013. Directed by Oscar-winning scriptwriter Christopher McQuarrie, Jack Reacher will see the blue-eyed Tom Cruise step into the slightly, ahem, bigger shoes of the tough-as-nails ex-cop.

The film is based on Child’s novel One Shot, which opens to five people getting killed by sniper shots. The assassin is caught and he asks his lawyer [played by Rosamund Pike] for just one thing — ‘Find me Jack Reacher’. But what could possibly connect the suspected psychopath with Reacher?

To mark Reacher’s page-to-screen journey, Random House India will release a tie-in edition of One Shot (Rs 543) next month, which will have an exclusive QR code on the back for a video that author Lee Child has recorded only for his Indian readers .

Even as Tom Cruise fans eagerly await his next, Reacher buffs have expressed indignation at the 6ft 5inch “giant killing machine” being played by a “5ft 7inch pretty boy”. There’s even a Facebook page called “Tom Cruise is no Jack Reacher!”

According to fans, Reacher could have been played by anyone from Chris Hemsworth and Kellan Lutz to Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles... “anyone but Tom Cruise!”

Such was the outrage that Child issued an explanation before shooting started, reported The Guardian: “There aren’t any such actors, so it’s much more a question of which actor has the talent and screen presence to create what Reacher does on the screen....”

But Tom Cruise should remain unfazed. After all, he has so much experience as Ethan Hunt and well, him becoming Jack Reacher is proving to be just that... Mission Impossible!
