Two youths who had snatched a gold chain from a woman in Alipore on Saturday were arrested from their hideout in Ekbalpore in a pre-dawn raid on Sunday.
Police said the snatching had taken place at 3.30pm on Saturday, when Sashikala Malasika was crossing Judges Court Road. “The duo, on a bike, slowed down in front of the woman and snatched away her chain,” said an officer of the detective department.
Sheikh Sameer, 22, and Mohammad Akbar, 20, were arrested from the port area at 4am on Sunday. The gold chain has been recovered.
Accident death
A nine-year-old girl died and two people were injured, one of them critically, when a goods van rammed into their bike on the Kona Expressway on Sunday morning.
Debasmita Sen, her mother Dolly and their neighbour Shaktipada Maity were on Maity’s bike when the accident occurred near the Baksara Road crossing. All three were taken to hospital. Debasmita was declared dead and Maity is in a critical condition. Dolly suffered minor injuries. The van was seized but its driver managed to flee.
