CPM meet

Chinsurah, Nov. 19: Police had to guard a CPM meeting venue on Sunday after Trinamul workers allegedly beat up the rival party’s workers in Hooghly’s Haripal, which was once a Left bastion.

The police said the Trinamul workers accused the CPM supporters of having criminal links and hurled stones at the zonal committee office in which a branch committee member was injured. Trinamul has denied the allegations.

SSKM death

Calcutta: A person in his fifties was found unconscious near a pond in the SSKM Hospital compound late on Sunday and died while being taken to the emergency ward. Police have ruled out foul play.

Marriage off

Midnapore: The block development officer of West Midnapore’s Chandrokona on Sunday prevented a 16-year-old girl from being married off to her history teacher. The girl’s parents, who had claimed her age was 20, failed to produce documents to prove that she was not a minor.

Killer brother

Bolpur: A farmer was beaten to death allegedly by his younger brother in a Birbhum village late on Saturday night over a long-standing family feud. The peasant’s wife has lodged a police complaint against the brother who has fled home.

Bomb maker

Krishnagar: A man out on bail in an extortion case was killed when a bomb he was allegedly making in a Nadia house went off on Sunday. Bapi Das was taken to NRS Hospital in Calcutta but was declared brought dead.

Cong feud

Behrampore: Two Congress factions clashed in a Murshidabad village on Sunday. One group, owing allegiance to a panchayat samiti sabhadipati, accused the other of attacking the house of the Beldanga MLA. No arrests have been made.
