ONGC upset Dempo

New Delhi: Defending champions Dempo Sports Club suffered their first defeat in the ongoing I-League on Friday when they lost 1-3 to ONGC, at the Ambedkar Stadium, here. In the 14-team I-League, East Bengal are now the only unbeaten side.

Though Armando Colaco’s boys are still on top of the table with 13 points from six matches, both Churchill Brothers (12) and East Bengal (11), who play each other on Saturday, now have a chance dislodge Dempo. ONGC won their first match this season and have five points.

ONGC were the deserving winners against a listless Dempo and opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Sorabuddin Mollick, who pounced on a rebound and volleyed home. The winners increased the margin in the 58th minute when Jatin Bisht’s accurate long ranger crashed into the net.

Dempo returned to the match for a brief period after Peter Carvalho made it 1-2 in the 61st minute. However, Eric Brown struck in the injury time to take it beyond the Goa team’s reach.

Colaco, however, remained unperturbed and said it was one of those rare off days for his team. Asked why he did not field their new recruit and former Arsenal youth team product Rohan Rickets, Colaco said the footballer was only good in criticising the coach in social networking websites.

“Rickets is extremely skilful but sadly he is not trying to adapt to our style of play. Instead, he is busy criticising… That’s sad.”
