Modern triumph

Guwahati, Nov. 16: Modern English School today lifted the 3rd Sitaram Agarwala under-17 inter-school cricket tournament trophy, defeating Delhi Public School by seven wickets in the final of the championship organised by Bud Cricket Club at Judges Field here.

Modern won the toss and put DPS in to bat. The DPS boys were all out for 166 in 39.2 overs and Modern boys lost three wickets, scoring 167 in 27.3 overs.

Subham Mandal, who was disqualified from the Assam state under-16 team trials after he was found to be overage in the medical examinations, literally fashioned the victory for Modern School.

After having scalped two wickets for only nine runs bowling seven overs, Mandal also topscored for Modern School with an unbeaten 64 off 61 balls.

The Class IX student was named Man of the Match as well as Man of the Tournament.

Bishal Mahanta of DPS picked up two wickets for 28 runs.

Hashmi Robson Islam (45, 4x4) was the topscorer for DPS.

Apart from Mandal, Biswajit Talukdar and Mrinmoy Baishya of Modern School took two wickets each, giving away 26 and 29 runs respectively.

Subham Tarafdar was named the Best Fielder of the Tournament and teammate Amar Pradhan the Best Wicketkeeper. DPS boy Neeraj Sharma was adjudged the Best Batsman and Kunal Sarma of Faculty High School the Best Bowler.

Gold Cup: In the opening match of the 21st Royal Gold Cup, Kohima Komets thrashed Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) by 6-1 goals, writes our correspondent from Kohima.
