Truck crushes elderly

A 74-year-old man was killed when a brick tractor, grappling with a brake failure, ran over him at Birsanagar zone No 1-B on Friday.

The incident, which took place around 1pm, triggered a one-hour road blockade near the mishap spot and choked Telco-Birsanagar Road.

Victim Baldev Raj was returning to his Prakashnagar home on his cycle and was negotiating the road when the tractor hit him. The elderly man died on the spot while the tractor driver fled. As news about Rajís death spread, his friends and relatives took to the street and set up a blockade. The protesters, including local residents, also demanded compensation for the deceasedís kin. Police soon swung into action and arrested the driver.

The blockade, which gave schoolchildren a harrowing time, was lifted around 2.30pm only after the officer in charge of Birsanagar police station M.P. Singh intervened and convinced the mob that the accident took place because of a brake failure and not rash driving. ďWe spoke to eyewitnesses, who said the tractor was not speeding. It was coming down a sloped road when its brakes suddenly malfunctioned. The driver didnít know what to do and ended up hitting the old man,Ē sub-inspector Singh said.

The officer added that after Raj fell on the road, the vehicle ran over him, causing fatal injuries in the head and abdomen. The cycle was completely crushed.

Police registered a case against the driver on the statement of the victimís son Rajesh Kumar. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
